BILLY + MARGOT RAW FOOD
WHAT IS RAW FEEDING?
Biologically Appropriate Raw Feeding (also known as BARF) is food that goes back to basics, as close to the original way that dogs would have eaten in the wild. A raw diet is made up of meals including meat, bone, offal and to make it a balanced meal our superfood blend of vegetables and herbs are added to all our recipes.

100% NATURAL
As well as being delicious and nutritious, there are many health benefits of feeding your dog a raw diet. The lack of processing in the production of raw food means that there are zero nasties and as with all Billy + Margot food, no grains. This results in food that is easy for your dog to digest as they take in more nutrients, resulting in more solid and less frequent poo's. The quality of the meat we use, combined with our superfood blend leaves dogs with soft, shiny coats and reduces skin inflammation and itching.
There are many other benefits to raw feeding including increased appetite, stabilised energy levels, strengthened immune system, improved anal gland health and is great for weight management.
SWITCHING TO RAW FOOD
We understand how switching your dog or puppy from one food to another can be daunting. There are different ways you can approach how you switch your dog onto raw food... so it’s best to choose the approach that works best for your dog, your schedule, lifestyle and what you’re comfortable with.
Once you’ve made the switch, we recommend feeding your dog one protein (starting with chicken or turkey), over a few days to determine whether there are any issues (looking out for soft stools and itching). Once you’re happy, you can then try another protein until they’ve tried the whole range. Variety is key when feeding a raw diet and we recommend feeding at least 4 proteins over each week.
A Straight Switch
In most cases dogs will empty their bowl first time, the smell, taste and variety they get from raw food means appetite doesn’t tend to be an issue. A straight switch is as simple as it sounds, remove their old food, and feed their recommended amount of Billy + Margot raw the next day. You can add a probiotic to their meals over the first few days just to settle their stomachs if needed.

A GRADUAL SWITCH
If you think your dog is a little fussy to new textures or tastes, or is known to have an easily upset stomach, a gradual transition to raw food may be your best choice. We recommend doing this over four days, feeding ¼ of your raw on the first day and gradually increasing the amount of raw food in the bowl until they’re eating only raw. You can extend this transition time to one week if you feel it’s needed.

What to expect when switching my dog to raw food?
Every dog is different, so for some dogs the switch to raw will be seamless, and you'll start to notice the benefits within a week or two (harder, smaller stools, cleaner teeth and shiny coat).
For some dogs with more sensitive tummies, they may have a slightly unsettled stomach the first day or two when trying a new protein, but this should settle very quickly. You can add a natural probiotic to your dogs meal when first switching to ease this and settle their tummy. Once switched there should be no on-going digestive issues.
Once switched to raw food, it's worth knowing that your dog is likely to poo less frequently and they will be smaller and harder. This is because their body absorbs more nutrients than with processed food.
You may also notice your dog drinks less water, this is completely normal too. Raw food has a much higher level of moisture and therefore your dog is getting hydration when eating, rather than with dry food dogs typically will want to drink a lot after each meal.
Some dogs during the first couple of weeks may also get hunger sickness, typically in the mornings. This is where they are used to being fed much bigger portions with dry or wet food and when switching to raw their bowl of food will typically be much smaller, as raw food is more nutritious and higher calories, so less is needed. This is just your dog adjusting to a change, and this will pass. To ease this you can split their daily allowance into smaller portions throughout the day, or give them a natural treat in the morning to ease this feeling until it passes.
My dog won’t eat the raw food?
Raw food is a completely new texture and taste for most dogs, and while the majority will empty their bowls on day one, some dogs take a little time to adjust to raw food.
If your dog isn't eating their meal, don't completely give up. We recommended feeding your dog in a place that has little distractions, so they know it's dinner time. With raw food we also recommended putting their meal down, and if within 15 minutes they haven't eaten, taking it up and storing in the fridge, then try again an hour later. This way your dog will know they need to eat their food when it's put down for them, as raw cannot be left out to graze on all day.
It may also be worth doing a gradual switch to raw if it's taking them a little time to adjust. Over a week add a small amount of raw to their old food on day 1 and gradually increase the amount of raw, until they're switched.
In some rare cases, if you've tried the above and your dog still isn't eating, it may be that your dog doesn't like the taste or smell of one protein. Make sure to try to full range to find all the proteins that your dog loves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I feed raw food?
Our raw food is made to be as convenient as possible. You store your dogs meals in the freezer, and defrost overnight in the fridge. You then simple serve them their required amount (use our raw food calculator above to know how much your dog needs).
It's important, with any dog food, to make sure you're being as hygenic as possible, especially when handling raw meat. We recommend defrosting your tubs either on a plate or in a small tub, to make sure any minor leakages as it defrosts are caught. Make sure to wipe surfaces after serving your dogs meal, and keep their feeding space and bowl clean.
Can I mix raw food with dry and wet food?
We encourage all owners to give there dogs a varied diet... exposure to different textures, tastes and smells is great and mixing proteins will help reduce potential food intollerances.
With raw feeding, as the meal is completely unprocessed it is digested quicker than dry or wet food. We therefore recommend, if you are going to feed a combination of raw and kibble that is done as two seperate meals, e.g. kibble in the morning and raw for dinner.
However a raw diet is completely balanced and nutritious, so if your dog loves our raw food, it's best for them if they only eat raw.
How do I store raw dog food?
Your Billy + Margot raw food should be frozen when you purchase, and needs to be stored in the freezer until ready to use.
Our tubs are made to easily stack and a typical freezer drawer should fit approx. 5KG.
Simply defrost each tub, or a few at a time depending how much your dog eats per day, in the fridge overnight. Once defrosted we recommened using these meals within 3 days.

Is your packaging recyclable?
Our plastic tubs are made from POP (prevented ocean plastics). This means we utilise plastic materials collected from coastal towns across the globe to make use of plastic that would have otherwise ended up in our oceans.
These tubs encourage a circular economy, as each tubs is made from POP but is also fully recyclable (just make sure to give it a quick rinse before popping into the recycling bin).
Our cardboard sleeves are also fully recyclable.
RAW FEEDING NOT FOR YOU?

We have spent many years developing high-protein, nutritous dry and wet food that dogs love. We also have a range of nutritous, natural treats that are great for all dogs, whether raw feed or not.
